Bill to prevent hate speech and hate crime tabled in Karnataka assembly

Belagavi: The Karnataka government on Wednesday tabled the Karnataka Hate Speech and Hate Crime (Prevention) Bill in the state Assembly. The bill has a provision for a fine of up to Rs one lakh and a jail term up to 10 years. The bill was cleared by the state cabinet on December 4. According to the bill, any expression, which is made, published or circulated in words either spoken or written or by signs or by visible representations or through electronic communication or otherwise, in public view, with an intention to cause injury, disharmony or feelings of enmity or hatred or ill-will against person alive or dead, class or group of persons or community, to meet any prejudicial interest is hate speech. Any biases on the grounds of religion, race, caste or community, sex, gender, sexual orientation, place of birth, residence, language, disability, or tribe have also been categorised as hate speech. 3 of family found dead at home in Karnataka, police suspect suicide

Bengaluru: Three members of a family were found dead at their home here on Monday morning, with the police suspecting it to be a case of suicide. The deceased have been identified as Muddamma (68), her daughter Sudha (38) and grandson Mounish (14), they said. On receiving information, the police reached the spot at Sudduguntepalya and found all three members of the family dead inside the house. SC notice to Karnataka CM on plea challenging his election in 2023

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday sought response from Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on a plea challenging his election from the Varuna assembly constituency in the 2023 state elections. A bench of Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta issued notice to Siddaramaiah seeking his reply on a plea filed by one K Shankara. “Issue notice,” the bench said. IndiGo crisis enters day 7; 127 flights cancelled from Bengaluru

Mumbai : Flight disruptions at IndiGo entered the seventh day as the crisis-hit carrier cancelled 127 flights from Bengaluru Airport on Monday, a source said. In another development, aviation safety regulator DGCA in an order on Sunday late evening extended the time by Monday 6 pm for IndiGo CEO Pieter Elbers and Chief Operating Officer and Accountable Manager Isidro Porqueras to submit reply to its show cause notice over the ongoing disruptions in the airline ’s operations. In the notices issued to Elbers and Porqueras on Saturday, the regulator said the large-scale operational failures pointed to significant lapses in planning, oversight, and resource management, and asked them to submit their replies within 24 hours. IndiGo has cancelled 127 flights, including 65 arrivals and 62 departures from Bengaluru Airport , the source said. Indigo crisis: Special trains from Vizag to Bengaluru to ease travel rush

Visakhapatnam: The Waltair Division of the East Coast Railway Zone here is running special trains to ease the travel rush to help people facing travel disruptions due to the mass flight cancellations by IndiGo. Among the six special trains being operated by ECoR, one will depart from Waltair Division headquarters in Visakhapatnam on December 8 for SMVT Bengaluru, with the return service scheduled to arrive in the port city on December 9. “Because of the flight cancellations, many people are stranded. Demand for train tickets has risen sharply. Taking this into account, we have introduced special trains to cater to the extra passengers created by this situation,” ECoR official Deepak Rout told PTI. Rout said the railway zone is closely monitoring passenger demand to add extra coaches to regular trains, and that additional special trains will be operated in coordination with other railway zones if required. Bengaluru : Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar on Saturday termed the Delhi Police’s notice to him, seeking financial and transactional details as part of its probe into the National Herald case, as “harassment” and said he will fight it legally. Condemning the move, Shivakumar, who is also the state Congress chief, questioned the need for a separate police probe when the ED had already filed a chargesheet in connection with the case. The notice issued by the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) states that Shivakumar is “supposed to have vital information” pertaining to the National Herald case registered on October 3 this year, against Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi . Mangaluru: Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Wednesday said he would not travel to New Delhi unless he is formally invited. His comments come after Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar’s visit to New Delhi on Wednesday to attend a wedding and to plan for a party event. The two leaders recently displayed bonhomie by hosting breakfast for each other at their residences in Bengaluru to quell speculation about leadership change in the state. While the Deputy CM flew to Delhi, Siddaramaiah reached Mangaluru to take part in an event to commemorate the centenary of social reformer Sri Narayana Guru’s meeting with Mahatma Gandhi.
