Mysuru Dasara: Police stop Dalit ministers from performing pooja

Mysuru Dasara

Bengaluru: Three ministers from the Dalit community were allegedly stopped by police from participating in the festivities at the Mysuru Dasara celebrations.

The incident took place near the Kote Anjaneya Swamy temple on October 21, during the Jamboo Savari procession.

Kannada and Culture Minister Shivaraj Tangadgi, Agriculture Minister PM Narendra Swamy and Muzrai Minister KS Basavanteppa were present and expressed their desire to conduct the Nandi Dhwaja puja. However, they were stopped because they were Dalits.

They were not allowed near the pooja ceremony. Only Mysuru district in-charge Minister Yathindra Siddaramaiah, along with Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, was allowed.

When Tangadgi, Narendra Swamy and Basavanteppa attempted to proceed towards the puja venue, Superintendent of Police CB Rishyanth blocked their way.

Tangadgi forced his way past the officer after being denied entry, voicing his displeasure. The SP then blocked Narendra Swamy and Basavanteppa from entering the venue, triggering a standoff.

The situation was resolved after Chief Minister Shivakumar intervened and directed the officer to let the ministers take part in the ritual. Narendra Swamy reportedly reprimanded the officer during the exchange, asking him not to touch him and to maintain distance.

CM orders probe

CM DK Shivakumar has directed Chief Secretary Shalini Rajneesh to conduct an inquiry into the incident. “Officials by preventing ministers from entering the venue, have acted in an unacceptable manner. I intervened personally and ensured that the ministers were allowed in. However, such indifference on the part of officials cannot be tolerated,” he said.

Action will be taken against the officials found guilty after the report is received, he added.
