Bengaluru traffic not responsible for NEET delay

Bengaluru: Bengaluru Traffic Police have clarified that traffic congestion was not responsible for three students missing entry to the NEET examination on Sunday, countering allegations made by several political leaders.
According to police, CCTV footage and route analysis revealed that the students left their homes late and chose longer routes to reach their examination centres.
The controversy erupted after three candidates were denied entry to their NEET examination centres for arriving beyond the stipulated reporting time. Opposition leaders, including BJP MP Tejasvi Surya and Union Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy, had blamed heavy traffic caused by a Congress event in Bengaluru for the delay.
On Sunday, senior Congress leader B.K. Hariprasad assumed charge as Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president at a function held at Palace Grounds. The event attracted a large number of party workers, leading to traffic congestion in some parts of the city, particularly around Hebbal, Mekhri Circle and Guttahalli.
However, Bengaluru Traffic Police said a detailed review of CCTV footage and traffic movement data showed that road conditions were largely normal during the period when the students were travelling to their examination centres. Police personnel had also been deployed at key junctions to ensure smooth vehicular movement.
According to the findings, one of the students left home at 12:57 pm despite being required to report at the examination centre by 1:30 pm. The candidate eventually reached the centre at 1:33 pm, three minutes after the reporting deadline. Police noted that the student had opted for a longer route despite a shorter and faster route being available from RT Nagar to the examination venue.
In a statement shared on social media, Bengaluru Traffic Police reiterated that the delay was not caused by traffic congestion linked to the Congress event. “The students left late from their residences and route selection contributed to the delay. Traffic conditions were normal, and necessary arrangements had been made to facilitate smooth movement,” the police said.
The department added that it remains committed to transparent, evidence-based assessments and urged the public to rely on verified facts rather than speculation.
