Gym trainer attacked in Karnataka, police dismiss claims of ‘love jihad’

Hubballi: A 23-year-old Muslim gym trainer was allegedly assaulted on Friday, April 3, after being taken away by a group following a confrontation linked to his relationship with a girl here, police said. The incident occurred within the limits of the Old Hubballi police station. The youth, identified as Sameer Mulla, sustained injuries in the assault and is undergoing treatment at a hospital, police said. Police dismiss ‘love jihad’ allegations City Police Commissioner N Shashikumar said the incident stemmed from a personal dispute between two families and was not related to “love jihad,” as alleged by certain groups. Speaking to the media, he said the incident took place between 8 am and 9 am, when a group of people went to the youth’s house, leading to a confrontation. UoH to study mental health issues among farmers linked to climate change

Hyderabad: The Department of Anthropology at the University of Hyderabad (UoH) has joined a global collaborative project to address mental health issues among farmers and farm workers in India caused by climate change and heat exposure. Titled “TOLAKARI” – transformation of lived experience and knowledge of heat, agriculture, and depression in India – the global project aims to understand the reasons behind heat-related mental health issues among Indian farmers , the university said in a release on Thursday, April 2. Through its research findings, TOLAKARI also aims to co-design a community-owned intervention to address the mental health issues and provide support. Farmers are one of the most vulnerable communities to heat exposure and depression, since extreme heat can reduce overall yield, lower income and potentially increase the risk of depression as a result. Bengaluru: Woman techie dies by suicide after son drowns

Bengaluru : A 29-year-old tech professional has allegedly died by suicide after her 11-month-old son was suspected to have accidentally drowned in a bucket of water at their residence here, police said on Thursday. The incident occurred on April 1 within the limits of the Chandra layout Police Station , they said. Police said a letter written in English by the woman was found near the bed, in which she stated that their son had fallen into water and died and that she could not save him, and sought forgiveness. The matter came to light after the woman’s husband, Mahantesh Wali, an engineer, filed a complaint with the police, officials said. The couple had been living in a rented house for the past four years, and they had a 11-month-old son, Agasthya, they added. Karnataka begins Census 2027 self-enumeration awareness campaign

Bengaluru: Karnataka government on Wednesday, April 1, launched an awareness campaign for Census 2027 Self Enumeration, urging citizens to complete their details online and cooperate fully with enumerators during the upcoming house listing operations. The Self Enumeration process will be open from April 1 to April 15, 2026, enabling residents to submit their Census details through the official portal, a statement issued by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s Office said. The campaign highlights a simple digital process, including login through mobile number and OTP, selecting a location, marking the house on the map, filling in household details, and generating a Self Enumeration reference ID. Alongside the announcement, the CMO released an animation video featuring two characters, Pragati and Vikas, depicted as Census enumerators, who appeal to citizens to provide information willingly and accurately.
