Woman ends life in Bengaluru over dowry-related harassment

Bengaluru: A 24-year-old woman allegedly died by suicide by hanging at her residence in southern Bengaluru, reportedly due to dowry-related harassment, police said on Tuesday.

The deceased was identified as Keerthisri.

In a complaint, her parents alleged that she was under severe mental distress following repeated monetary demands from her husband, Guruprasad, and his family.

According to police, Keerthisri was married to Guruprasad, a gym trainer, in 2023, and her parents claimed they had spent around Rs 30 lakh on the wedding.

They further alleged that in December 2025, Guruprasad demanded Rs 10 lakh for house construction. While Rs 8 lakh was paid, he allegedly continued to pressure Keerthisri to arrange the remaining Rs 2 lakh at the earliest.

Unable to bear the continued harassment, Keerthisri allegedly ended her life by hanging at her home in Yediyur in the Banashankari area on Sunday, police said.

Based on a complaint lodged by her parents, police have registered a case of dowry harassment and abetment to suicide against Guruprasad and his parents at the Banashankari police station. Further investigation is underway, police added.

Bengaluru: Bus conductor fails to return Rs 1; court orders BMTC to pay Rs 3K as compensation

The Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) was recently ordered to pay a man Rs 2,000 in compensation after he was denied Rs 1 change for a bus ride by the Bengaluru Urban District Consumer Dispute Redressal Commission. According to several media reports, in 2019, a man named Ramesh Naik went on a BMTC bus from Shantinagar to Majestic bus depot, during which the conductor issued a ticket for Rs 29. The complainant paid Rs 30 and was not given the change. Keeping up the fight, Naik then complained about the conductor to BMTC’s high authorities. Bengaluru : The arrest of Kannada film actor Ranya Rao, daughter of a senior IPS officer in Karnataka , has exposed a major gold smuggling operation in India. Investigations by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) revealed that the 31-year-old actress used an unusual method to evade security checks — she attached 14 gold bars to her thighs using adhesive, wrapped them with tape, and concealed them under a crepe bandage.
