Karnataka CM hints at tabling caste census in next cabinet meeting

Vijayanagara: Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Sunday hinted that the caste census would be tabled in the next cabinet meeting. “We received the report last year. The report has to be tabled before the cabinet. We have spent Rs 160 crore on it. Let’s see what discussion and decision takes place in the cabinet,” Siddaramaiah told reporters here. When asked about people opposing the caste census, the CM said, “There will be either support or opposition to the caste census and reservations.” The Chairperson of the Commission for Backward Classes, K Jayaprakash Hegde, submitted the socio-economic and education survey report, commonly known as the caste census report, to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on February 29, 2024. 2 dead, 12 injured as bus rams into truck on Hyderabad-Bengaluru highway

Hyderabad: Two persons were killed and 12 were injured in an accident involving a bus and a truck on the Hyderabad- Bengaluru highway early on Saturday, January 10. The accident was reportedly caused by a tyre burst. The bus driver applied a sudden break to avoid a collision with a car and rammed into the truck from behind. Speaking to Siasat.com , the Jadcherla police said, “The bus cleaner and a passenger are dead. The injured were shifted to a hospital. A Bengaluru court has granted bail to Sharad Bhausaheb Kalaskar, the final accused still in custody in the Gauri Lankesh murder case. This decision, made by Principal City Civil and Sessions Judge B Muralidhara Pai on January 8, allows Kalaskar’s release on a personal bond under strict conditions. With this ruling, 17 out of the 18 accused in the case are now out on bail, while one individual remains absconding. Denied Ayushman Bharat insurance, Bengaluru cancer patient kills self

A 72-year-old cancer patient reportedly killed himself in Bengaluru after being denied insurance benefits of the Ayushman Bharat scheme. He was a retired state government employee who held an insurance card under the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB PM-JAY). Being above the age of 70, he was eligible a health coverage up to Rs 5 lakhs. Following a diagnosis of gastric cancer at Kidwai Memorial Institute of Oncology (KMIO) in Bengaluru, doctors suggested a major surgery after multiple rounds of chemotherapy. However, his Ayushman Bharat coverage could not be availed as the state of Karnataka has not implemented the scheme for senior citizens. Bengaluru: Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara stated on Friday that based on the current information about the Maoist activities in the state, the six individuals, who surrendered recently, are believed to be the last surviving in the state. Speaking to reporters, he responded to questions on one of the Maoists, Ravindra, remaining elusive even though the government claimed that Karnataka is now a “Maoist-free state”. Further, addressing the disappearance of Ravindra, the state home minister said there is information that the group of surrendered Maoists had expelled him. However, the reason for his expulsion is unknown, and an investigation is underway. “If anyone else emerges, they will be monitored,” he added. Sexual assault videos case: Karnataka HC stalls framing of charges against Revanna

Bengaluru: The Karnataka High Court on Thursday, January 9, issued directions to stall the process of framing of charges against Prajwal Revanna, the former JD(S) MP and grandson of former Prime Minister, HD Deve Gowda in the sensational sexual assault video case. The bench headed by Justice M Nagaprasanna has passed the order in this regard and issued directions to the lower court not to frame charges against accused Prajwal, who is lodged in the Bengaluru Central Jail, till January 16. Earlier, the date for framing of charges against him was fixed as January 13. The bench passed the order while looking into the petition submitted by Prajwal Revanna in this regard. Bengaluru: Six hardcore naxals (Maoists) on Wednesday surrendered before Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah here. As a symbol of giving up their armed struggle, Latha Mundagaru handed over her Naxal uniform to the Chief Minister along with a copy of her memorandum. Siddaramaiah welcomed the ultra and her five associates by giving them roses and copies of the Constitution. The CM said Sundari Kutluru is from Dakshina Kannada district, Latha from Chikkamagaluru, Marappa Aroli from Raichur and Vanajakshi Balehole from Chikkamagaluru.
