Karnataka Health dept on alert as Covid cases cross 800-mark

Bengaluru, June 24 (IANS) The Karnataka Health Department is on an alert after the Covid cases in the state breached 800-mark in the last 24 hours. The state reported 858 new Covid cases inching closer to 1,000-mark against 682 discharges. The positivity rate for the day recorded was 2.36 per cent, while the weekly positivity rate stood at 3.63 per cent as per the latest statistics available with the state health department. Taking serious note of the development, marshals are being deputed to monitor wearing of masks in Bengaluru. The government is yet to decide on imposing a fine for breaking Covid protocols. The Health department is likely to convene a high-level meeting soon against the backdrop of an alarming rise in cases. NLSIU alumni slam action against students for protesting sexual harassment

Bengaluru: The alumni of the National Law School of India University (NLSIU) in an open letter slammed the institute for punishing two girl students who raised voice against sexual harassment . The alumni have appreciated the courage of the girls for choosing not to apologise and cough up the fine as directed by NLSIU in connection with the incident. The alumni, about 179 of them, have expressed “deep disappointment” and also expressed their concern over handling of the issue. According to sources, the accused is studying in fourth year. He was a CLAT topper. “It has come to knowledge that NLSIU initiated disciplinary proceedings against two female student facilitators appointed under its Code to Combat Sexual Harassment, for narrating a particular survivor’s experience of sexual harassment by a current student of NLSIU,” the letter stated. Karnataka: Pre-dawn earthquake sends residents into tizzy

Bengaluru: An earthquake measuring 3.4 on the Richter scale shook parts of Hassan district and neighbouring regions in Karnataka in the wee hours of Thursday, a disaster management official said. The earthquake was also felt in many villages near Somwarpet in the Kodagu district. People ran out of their houses following the tremor. According to Karnataka State Disaster Management Authority Commissioner, Manoj Rajan, the epicentre was Maluganahalli village under Nagaranahalli village panchayat in Holenarasipura Taluk of Hassan district. He said as per the seismic intensity map of the said earthquake from the epicentre, the intensity observed is moderate and the tremor may be felt up to a maximum radial distance of 40-50 km from the epicentre. This type of earthquake does not create any harm to the local community, although there might be slight shaking observed locally. I-T raids at multiple locations linked to educational institutes in Bangaluru

Bangaluru: The Income Tax department was conducting raids at the offices and buildings of some reputed private educational institutes in Bengaluru on Thursday. According to sources, the I-T sleuths were conducting raids since early morning on Sri Krishnadevaraya Education Institution, Reva University and Divyashree Institute and others in Bengaluru. The raids were taking place in multiple locations simultaneously. Both corporate offices and education institute buildings were raided at more than 10 places. Sources said that an I-T officers’ team from the Karnataka and Goa Zone were conducting the raids. A team of 250 officers from the Income Tax Department were involved in the action. The raids were being conducted following complaints that the institutes were charging heavy amounts of fees from foreign students, were blocking seats and indulged in tax evasion. Bengaluru : The BJP high command has summoned Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai to Delhi. Accordingly, Bommai will leave for the national capital on Thursday afternoon and return on Friday. Hassan : Expressing dissatisfaction over the Centre’s newly launched Agnipath Scheme, Former Karnataka Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy alleged that it was a programme to bring Nazi forces in India which was back then in the Hitler era.
