Karnataka draws highest FDI in last quarter: CM Bommai

Bengaluru : India has drawn the highest Foreign Direct Investments in the last quarter and among the states, Karnataka tops the list, Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai said on Sunday. Speaking to the media persons here before leaving for Davos to participate in the World Economic Forum Summit, Bommai said, “We are proud of it … I am set to meet many business honchos and captains of the industry. “Many of them have shown interest to invest in Karnataka. 18-year-old girl dies after falling off second floor of mall in Bengaluru

Bengaluru: In a shocking incident, an 18-year-old girl died after falling off the second floor of a mall in Bengaluru on Saturday. Her male friend, who also fell with her, broke his leg. The incident took place in the 5th Avenue Mall on Brigade Road in Cubbon Park police station limits. The deceased girl has been identified as Lia, while her male friend has been identified as Chris Peter. The victim was a resident of Cox town while her friend lives in HAL. Both were doing their second year in commerce at Siant Joseph’s College in Bengaluru. They had come to the mall for shopping with their friends. According to preliminary information, while climbing the stairs, the girl allegedly slipped and fell from the second floor. Peter also jumped to save her, but in vain. The girl had suffered severe head injury and succumbed to profuse bleeding. Peter was saved as he fell on her, the police said. Karnataka: Man sent to 7 years in jail for abetting woman’s suicide

Bengaluru : The Karnataka High Court on Saturday sentenced a man to seven years in prison for his role in the suicide of a woman. The woman ended her life after being abused and assaulted by the accused who was her neighbour. She held him responsible for taking the extreme step. The high court had quashed the lower court order of acquittal of the accused, Shanta Shetty. The bench headed by Justice S. Rachaiah passed the order after considering the petition submitted by the Chamarajanagar police challenging the acquittal of the accused. The court observed that the accused was acquitted by the lower court for lack of certification on mental health of the deceased lady. The certification in this case is a mere technicality and it can’t be considered as an evidence, the court noted. “If the statement is trustworthy, it could be considered as an evidence. Bengaluru: A woman in Bengaluru has filed a complaint against her fiance for slapping her in public after she questioned him about a previous relationship, police said on Saturday. The complaint was lodged under IPC Sections 504, 341 and 323 for voluntarily causing hurt and wrongful restraint. The police has also issued a notice to the man to appear for questioning. According to the police, the incident took place outside the city’s KempeGowda International Airport on May 7 and came to light just recently. Karnataka mining: SC allows firms to export excavated iron ore from mines

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Friday permitted mining firms to export their excavated iron ore from mines in three districts of Karnataka- Ballari, Chitradurga, and Tumakuru. A bench of Chief Justice of India NV Ramana and Justices Krishna Murari and Hima Kohli took into consideration the stand of the Central government and lifted the curb on the export of iron ore. It asked the firms to observe the conditions imposed by the authorities. Recently, the Centre supported the plea of miners from Karnataka to allow them to export their stocks of iron ore, saying the situation has improved since the ban was imposed in the state due to illegal mining and encroachment upon forest land. Hoax bomb call triggers panic in Bengaluru International airport

Bengaluru:  Tension gripped Kempegowda International Airport (KIAL) here on Friday following a bomb threat call, which later turned out to be a hoax. Airport authorities, Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel and Dog squad as well as Bomb disposal squads swung into action creating panic among the passengers. According to police, the call was received around 3.50 a.m. The police control room recorded the call and intimated the airport authorities. The authorities conducted security checks and combed the airport premises and terminal building for more than hour for abandoned bags and suspicious articles. After conducting a thorough check it was ascertained that the threat was a hoax bomb call. Security has been tightened on the airport premises after the incident. Further investigations are underway.
