Appointments to Boards, Corporations decided by party: K’taka CM

Bengaluru : Appointments to various Boards and Corporations are decided after due deliberation by the party, Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai said on Monday. Reacting to BJP state President Nalin Kumar Kateel’s statement that the appointments would be made in the next week, Bommai said, “It depends on the party. There is no proposal before the Chief Minister on the issue of appointments to Boards and Corporations. The party leadership would examine the issue and submit a report. Action would be taken based on that,” Bommai told mediapersons. Preparations for the Budget have started. Internal meetings have been held with finance and revenue generating departments in the month of December. Instructions have been issued on achieving the targets. Man held for raping 8-yr-old in K’taka

Bengaluru: A 36-year-old man has been arrested for raping an eight-year-old girl here, police said on Monday. The incident took place in the limits of Nandini Layout police station. According to police, the accused Anil Kumar (36), an auto driver lived next to the girl’s house. The survivor’s mother is a garment factory worker and had gone to work on Saturday when the crime took place. On seeing the girl alone, the accused entered her house and sexually assaulted her. Though the child tried to resist, the accused overpowered her and committed the offence, police said. When the woman returned from work, she found her daughter crying. On being asked, the girl broke down and narrated the incident. A police complaint was then lodged. Acting on the complaint, the Nandini Layout police have arrested the accused and sent him to judicial custody. Further investigation is on. Campus Front of India condemns Karnataka govt to establish Sanskrit University

Bengaluru : Karnataka State Committee of the Campus Front of India has condemned the state government’s decision to establish a Sanskrit University saying that it is an attempt to subvert the state’s language Kannada. “The state government has allotted Rs 359 crore to establish Sanskrit University, but they are not bothered to develop Kannada Universities which is the mother tongue of Kannadiga’s. The state government must clarify why the government is giving importance to another language other than Kannada in Karnataka which has a population of about 6 crores”, asked the Campus Front of India on Sunday. Karnataka reports over 50,000 COVID-19 cases

Bengaluru : Karnataka on Sunday added 50,210 fresh infections to its cumulative COVID-19 tally and 19 deaths taking the total caseload and fatalities to 35,17,682 and 38,582 respectively. This the second time when the state has crossed 50,000 daily infections. On May 5, 2021, the state had reported 50,112 infections. However, back then the daily fatalities were quite high with 346 deaths on a single day, whereas on Sunday it was 19. In its daily bulletin, the state’s health department said 22,842 people were discharged, taking the total number of recoveries to 31,21,274. The active cases in the state stood at 3,57,796. The infections on Sunday were mainly driven by Bengaluru, which contributed more than half of the total infections — 26,299. The city also reported eight deaths. Other districts too had fresh cases including 4,359 in Mysuru, 1,963 in Tumakuru, 1,922 in Hassan, 955 in Dharwad, 947 in Udupi, 925 in Bengaluru Rural and 904 in Ballari. Bengaluru:  The issue of wearing a hijab (head covering worn in public by Muslim women) to the colleges along with the uniform has sparked a debate in Karnataka over religious practices impacting the education system in the state. The matter has also snowballed into a controversy on whether the hijab could be considered as part of the uniform. The ruling BJP is deliberating on whether to take a call on allowing hijab as part of the uniform of college students. State Education Minister B.C. Nagesh, while opposing the wearing of hijab to classrooms, has said that a decision would be taken on the issue soon by the government. The experts as well as students are divided over the issue. Bengaluru: Karnataka’s tableau for the Republic Day parade in New Delhi is themed ‘Karnataka, the cradle of traditional handicrafts’. As per information, the then Department of Information and Publicity (DIP) was assigned the job of making the tableau on behalf of the state and the DIP first participated in the Republic Day Parade in New Delhi in 1972. This is the 50th year of participation by the Department of Information and Public Relations, marking the Golden Jubilee of participation on the eve of the Platinum Jubilee of India’s Independence. This is also the 13th consecutive time that the state’s tableau has been selected and out of the 12 states that have been selected Karnataka is the only state from South India to feature on the Republic Day parade. Tiger Census begins in Bandipur National Park in K’taka

Chamarajanagar: The National Tiger Estimation (Census), which will be taken up in three phases, got underway at the Bandipur Tiger Reserve in Karnataka on Saturday. The national park is spread across 868.63 km in Chamarajanagar district in Karnataka. The tiger Census will begin at Nagarahole Tiger Reserve on Sunday (January 23) and at Biligiri Ranganathaswamy Temple Tiger Reserve from January 27. In the backdrop of the tiger Census, the 6 am safari has been cancelled from January 23 to 25 and between January 27 and February 1. The Census includes collection of data on herbivores, including elephants, gaurs and other animals, apart from tigers. This year, the Census report will be uploaded on an app, a software-based monitoring system introduced in the tiger reserves across the country with an objective of surveillance and patrolling of tigers.
