Dalit man dies after police custody in Bengaluru; family cries foul

A 24-year-old Dalit man died in a rehabilitation center after being allegedly beaten to death during police custody in Bengaluru. Darshan, who died on November 26, was an alcoholic and often picked fights. According to his mother, Adilakshmi, police officers from the Viveknagar station took him into custody on November 12 after a brawl with his neighbour. The mother alleged that she was not allowed to see or meet her son. In her police complaint, she has named assistant sub-inspector Pawan and two other policemen for brutally assaulting her son to the extent that he was unable to walk. There was no medical care provided despite his deteriorating condition. Nine people, including police constable Annappa Naik, have been arrested. “In total, nine individuals have been arrested, and Rs 7.11 crore in cash has been recovered,” police said in a statement. CS Chinnaiah alias Chinna, the whistleblower in the ongoing Dharmasthala case, was granted bail by a Mangaluru court on Monday, November 24. The bail was granted on 12 conditions, including a bond of Rs 1 lakh, reported Vartha Bharti Chinna had been lodged in the Shivamogga jail for the past three months. Bengaluru : A 57-year-old woman here allegedly lost about Rs 32 crore in a sophisticated “digital arrest” scam that lasted over six months, following which a case has been registered. Posing as CBI officers, the fraudsters enforced a “digital arrest” by holding her under constant Skype surveillance. They used threats of arrest to coerce her into sharing all financial details and to make 187 bank transfers. In her complaint, the software engineer of Indiranagar in the city stated that the ordeal lasted for over six months, until she got a ‘clearance letter’ from the fraudsters. It began on September 15, 2024, with a call from a person claiming to be from DHL Andheri, alleging that a parcel booked in her name contained credit cards, passports and MDMA, and said her identity had been misused. Bengaluru: Twenty-one employees of a Bengaluru-based “fraudulent software firm” were arrested for allegedly cheating US citizens by posing as Microsoft technical support staff, police said on Saturday. The arrests were made during a coordinated operation carried out by the Special Cell of the Cyber Command and the Cyber Crime Police Station, Whitefield Division, they added. Based on information, a case was registered under relevant sections the Information Technology Act and Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, a statement issued by the office of the DGP stated. “The company itself is engaged in fraudulent activities,” the statement added. After obtaining a search warrant from the court here, a raid was conducted on Friday and Saturday at a place in Whitefield from where “the fraudulent company” was operating, they said.
