Bengaluru : The removal of a Hanuman flag from a public place in Mandya district of Karnataka has taken a turn for the worse, with demands being raised on Wednesday for the removal of green flags installed in public places in the state. The Karnataka Government is in a fix over the development. In one social media post that went viral, one Shashank JS has questioned Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, asking them why there was a green flag opposite the JJ Nagar police station in the Chamrajpet Assembly constituency of Bengaluru city. Karnataka Governor sends ordinance on 60% use of Kannada in signboards back to govt

Bengaluru : Karnataka Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot has sent back an ordinance mandating 60 percent use of Kannada in signboards of businesses and establishments, to the state government. This was revealed by Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar on Tuesday. “We (the government) approved an ordinance on signboards. The Governor has sent it back saying it should be passed in the Assembly. He could have given his assent now. Giving protection and respect to Kannada is our government’s commitment,” Shivakumar said. The Karnataka Cabinet had on January 5, given its approval to an ordinance to amend the Kannada Language Comprehensive Development Act that mandates 60 per cent use of the state’s language in signage. Kalaburagi : In a tragic incident, a brother and his sister died after drowning in a well on Tuesday in Patapalli village near Chincholi taluk in the Kalaburagi district of Karnataka. According to the police, the girl had jumped into the well in a fit of rage. Upon seeing her leaping, her brother rushed and jumped into the well in an attempt to rescue her. The deceased are identified as 19-year-old Nandini and 23-year-old Sandeep. Police explained that Sandeep had scolded his sister for being irregular in college and had asked her to attend classes regularly and this had led to a fiery argument between siblings. Bengaluru: The alarming surge in POCSO (Protection of Children from Sexual Offences) cases in Karnataka over the past three years has raised concerns, with a staggering 9,862 cases registered between 2021 and 2023. Disturbingly, the conviction rate remains dismally low, with only 202 cases resulting in convictions. Despite the implementation of numerous government schemes aimed at safeguarding children and preventing sexual offenses, the persisting occurrence of cases involving sexual violence and child marriages underscores the need for swift and effective judicial responses. The state crime department records reveal that Bengaluru tops the list in POCSO cases, registering 1,454 cases over the three-year period. In contrast, Belagavi and Kalaburagi reported the lowest numbers, each recording 79 cases. Bagalkot : Four students, including a girl, were killed and eight others injured in a collision between a school bus and a tractor in Bagalkot district of Karnataka on Monday. The incident took place in the early hours near Alagur village located close to Jamkhandi town in the district. Mandya : Keragodu village here faced tense moments on Sunday, January 28, after the authorities removed a ‘Hanuma dwaja’, a saffron flag bearing Lord Hanuman’s portrait, from a 108-foot-tall flag post. The incident led to a political confrontation between the government and opposition in the state. A large contingent of police personnel was deployed as a precautionary measure when people from the village and its surroundings, along with members of the BJP, JD(S), and Bajrang Dal, gathered to protest against the removal of the flag. Bengaluru: In a significant move towards ensuring the efficient execution and monitoring of the state government’s five ambitious ‘guarantee’ schemes, the Department of Personnel and Administrative Reforms has issued an order to establish ‘Guarantee Schemes Implementation Authorities’ at the state and district levels. Additionally, ‘Guarantee Schemes Implementation Committees’ will be formed at the taluk and BBMP (Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike) levels. The State Level Guarantee Schemes Implementation Authority will play a pivotal role in overseeing the implementation of these schemes. Chitradurga : Four members of a family, including three children, were killed on the spot in a road accident on Thursday near the Sanikere village in Karnataka’s Chitradurga district. Three other persons were seriously injured in the incident and were being treated at a hospital.
