Textbook politics: Fresh row erupts in Karnataka over description of Basavanna

Bengaluru: The politics over textbook revision in Karnataka refuse to die down as the ruling BJP is now in a fix over a fresh row over the description of social reformer Basavanna, who is revered by the Veerashaiva-Lingayat community. The prominent seers of the community have urged Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai to get the description of Basavanna corrected. They have also warned Bommai of protests if the revision is not carried out. The Veerashaiva-Linagayat community is standing firmly with BJP in the state, and the issue is being considered seriously by the ruling party. Bengaluru: The Karnataka police in a crackdown on foreigners staying illegally in Bengaluru, have detained 32 foreigners including 13 women, the police said on Tuesday. Police sources said that all the foreign nationals are from African countries, especially from Nigeria. The raids were conducted on Monday in Kothanur, Bagalur, Amrutahalli, Sampigehalli, Yelahanka, Chikkajala and other places. The raids are being conducted to nab foreigners who are involved in cyber crimes, drug peddling and frauds. Bengaluru: In a bid to expose rampant smoking in public places, thousands of cigarette and bidi butts were collected by NSS volunteers, citizens and civil society organisations across the city. The collected butts were displayed at NIMHANS on the occasion of ‘World No Tobacco Day’ on Tuesday urging all the MPs from Karnataka and the Union Health Ministry to get the principal tobacco control law COTPA (Cigarette and Other Tobacco Products Act) amended and make public places 100 per cent smoke-free. As part of the three-week long campaign, the Consortium for Tobacco Free Karnataka and its coalition partners collected the butts from public places like bus stops, educational institutions, parks, government offices, hospitals, tea shops and hotels in different parts of Bengaluru. Bengaluru pvt hospital’s portico collapses, 4 labourers rescued

Bengaluru: Karnataka Fire and Emergency Services personnel have rescued four labourers stuck beneath the collapsed portico of a private hospital in Bengaluru on Tuesday. Fortunately, there was no movement of patients or people at the time of the incident at at 6.15 a.m. in the Saint Martha’s hospital premises. The portico arch had collapsed early Tuesday morning. The labourers — Moyuddeen, Chand Pasha, Rafi Saab, Basavaraj — were rescued after the personnel carried out a mission for more than three hours. DCP in-charge of Central Division Dr S.D. SUV driver runs over stray dog in B’luru, FIR lodged

Bengaluru: Karnataka Police have launched a manhunt for an SUV driver who ran his vehicle over a stray dog here. A shocking video of the incident, which took place on May 27, emerged on Monday in which the dog could be seen sleeping by the roadside when the SUV mowed it down. From the video, it appeared that the driver deliberately ran his vehicle over the dog. Animal lovers have lodged a complaint against the SUV driver with the Jayanagar police. The police have registered a case under Section 11 of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, along with the relevant sections of the IPC. Bengaluru logs over 200 Covid-19 cases after 88 days

Bengaluru:  For the first time in 88 days, Bengaluru has reported more than 200 Covid-19 cases in just 24 hours, raising concerns among health authorities. According to the Karnataka Health Department, the state capital registered a total of 232 cases, while the positivity rate has also increased to 1.20 per cent. The last time Bengaluru breached the 200 cases mark was on March 3 with 239 infections. Currently, there are 1,943 active Covid cases in the city and majority of them are being treated at home. There were no new containment zones declared in the last 24 hours. The city has five containment presently and a total of 12,930 Covid tests were conducted on Sunday. In the same period, the state registered a total of 241 new Covid cases. For the 11th consecutive day, no deaths were reported. Karnataka records 241 new COVID-19 cases

Bengaluru : Karnataka saw a spike in COVID-19 cases with 241 fresh infections reported on Sunday taking the total number of affected people to 39,51,739, the state health department said. The state had recorded 196 cases on Saturday. There were zero fatalities due to COVID-19 in the state during the last 24 hours. Of the new infections, Bengaluru urban district contributed 232, while Dakshina Kannada reported four, Tumakuru three and Belagavi two cases. There were zero infections and fatalities in 27 districts of the state. The department said 98 people were discharged, taking the total number of recoveries to 39,09,592 till date. The number of active cases stood at 2,041. The positivity rate for the day was 1.29 per cent. As many as 18,579 tests were conducted, including 14,053 RT-PCR tests. Bengaluru : The Karnataka Police have arrested three persons, including a woman in connection with honey-trap and extortion of Rs 1.16 crore from a doctor in Bengaluru, police said on Friday. Dr Shankar Baburao from Aland town of Kalaburagi had lodged a complaint with the Upparpet police station. Later the case was investigated by the special wing CCB. The investigations revealed that the victim doctor’s friend Nagaraj from Kalaburagi was the kingpin behind the conspiracy. Bengaluru: A section of the Karnataka Secretariat employees have decided to skip work on Friday, by calling for “Secretariat Bandh”, to protest against the state government’s move for “rationalising the workforce” by reducing staff, along with other demands. Terming the bandh call as “illegal”, the government on Thursday said it has taken note of the move “very seriously”. Bengaluru : The Karnataka High Court has refused to quash an FIR and case in the special CBI court in Bengaluru against the managing director of a company who along with others are accused of cheating the IFCI Limited of over Rs 200 crore. Two loans of Rs 90 crore and Rs 100 crore were obtained by a company, VNR Infrastructures, and its managing director Vakati Narayana Reddy mortgaged two separate sets of properties in Mahabubnagar and Rangareddy districts of Telangana. The fair value of the mortgaged property in Mahabubnagar was valued at Rs 257 crore and distress sale value at Rs 231 crore. Correspondingly, the properties in Rangareddy district were valued at Rs 320 crore and Rs 256 crore, respectively. The loan was sanctioned in 2015 and the company started defaulting on repayment the same year. In 2019, the loans were classified as non-performing asset (NPA) and the loan stood at Rs 205 crore. Bengaluru: A house owner was arrested on the charge of raping a student (his tenant) by threatening her with a pistol here, police said on Monday. Anil Ravishankar Prasad from Bihar has been arrested. The victim, who hailed from West Bengal, was staying on a rented accommodation since March and studied in a private college. The accused, who is into tiles business, often objected to the victim’s friends visiting her leading to frequent arguments between the two. One day, Prasad noticed that a male friend of the girl had stayed the night and locked his bike. He then sent the boy away threatening to lodge a police case against him. Irked by this, the girl warned him that she would complain about him to her parents. The accused, who had gone to her house on the pretext of discussing the issue, took out a pistol he was carrying and placed it on her head. He then assaulted her sexually on April 11.
