Bengaluru : A consensual agreement has been reached between the Karnataka government and private colleges to not hike the fees in engineering courses in private colleges, state Minister for Higher Education, C.N. Ashwath Narayan, said on Wednesday. The decision was taken at a meeting with representatives of private engineering colleges. Following the agreement, the fees for engineering courses in private colleges for students who secure admission this year under government quota will continue as earlier in two different slabs of Rs 65,340 and Rs 58,806, the Minister said. “The other important decision drawn in the meeting was that maximum cap of Rs 20,000 each has been fixed for fees collected in the form of ‘miscellaneous fees’ and ‘skill fees’. This decision has been taken as per the recommendations of a committee headed by Karisiddappa, the Vice-Chancellor of Vishwesharaiah Technical University (VTU),” Narayan said. “The other major decision is that starting from this year, the

Bengaluru : The chief commissioner of Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), Gaurav Gupta, on Wednesday ordered to re-conduct the survey of dilapidated buildings in Bengaluru, following two incidents of building collapse in the city wherein families narrowly escaped moments before the tragedies. Gupta has instructed the zonal joint commissioners and chief engineers to form a committee led by the special commissioner of the project department within 15 days to re-conduct a survey of dilapidated buildings in the city and submit a report on the same. In 2019, the BBMP had conducted a survey and identified 185 such buildings, of which 10 have been demolished. The chief commissioner conducted a virtual meeting on surveying dilapidated buildings in the BBMP limits. Bengaluru : A Nigerian actor who appeared in Tamil blockbusters such as ‘Singham’ and ‘Vishwaroopam’, and some Bollywood films as well, has been arrested on charges of drug peddling in Bengaluru, police sources said on Thursday. The police are now looking into his connections with the Sandalwood film industry here, and in Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad and other cities. The Karnataka police arrested Chekwume Malvin, 45, who was staying in Bhattarahalli near K.R.Puram here on a medical visa. He was arrested while trying to sell drugs to customers on September 27. The police have recovered 15 grams of MDMA and 250 ML of hashish oil worth Rs 7.5 lakh from the accused person. According to police, the accused has acted in 20 Indian movies including Hindi, Kannada, Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam languages. Bengaluru : Karnataka Police on Wednesday arrested five persons for trying to extort a young couple after taking their private video while they were sitting in their car on the outskirts of Bengaluru. The accused are identified as Ashif (29), Nawaz Pasha (22), Liyakhat Pasha (30), Salman Khan (28) and Roohid (26). All of them are drivers and residents of Handenahalli village near Hosakote on the outskirts of Bengaluru. According to police, the incident took place on September 25. The young couple had gone to a private place in their car where they wanted to spend some time together. At about 12 noon, the accused persons came as a gang and told the couple that they have taken video of their private moments. The miscreants demanded Rs 5 lakh and threatened the couple that if they failed to pay the money, their video will be made viral on the social media, the police said. By that time, the miscreants noticed few local people approaching them and escaped from the spot on bikes. The w

Bengaluru : Karnataka chief minister Basavaraj Bommai on the occasion of World Heart Day on Wednesday took a pledge to make it a point to walk for 30 minutes daily. “If it is not possible due to work pressure, I will ensure that I will complete the walk on the treadmill,” he said. Speaking after inaugurating brisk walk programme organized from the main entrance of Vidhana Soudha to Kanteerava stadium as part of the World Heart Day, Bommai said, he was irregular with his exercise. “From today onwards I will take up brisk walk regularly. If there is a pressure I will do it on the walker. I request the people also to take care of their health. Individual and community health are important,” he noted. People should be enlightened about first aid treatment in case of heart attack and they should also be told about the importance of the golden hour. 60 students of Bengaluru school test COVID+

Bengaluru : The district authorities have sealed Sri Chaitanya Girls’ Residential School in Bengaluru following 60 of its students testing positive for COVID-19. Of those who tested positive, only two are symptomatic. The development has come as a big worry for the Karnataka health and education department as the B.S. Bommai government prepares to open primary classes soon. Bengaluru Urban District Commissioner J. Manjunath said the students tested positive on September 26. The COVID-19 tests were conducted on 480 students as one of the students from Bellary developed Covid-like symptoms. The girls who tested positive are from Classes 11 and 12. Forty-six students, who tested positive belong to different districts of Karnataka and 14 students came from Tamil Nadu. There are also 22 teachers, 57 staff members working in the residential school. Mangaluru: A police constable has been booked on the charges of raping a girl in the Dakshina Kannada district. The accused constable is posted in the Kadaba police station.  According to the complaint lodged by the victim’s father, the girl came to Kadaba police station to lodge a rape case two years ago. Thereafter the accused constable used to come to her home. Then he raped the girl and promised to marry her. The incident came to light when the victim was five and a half months pregnant. When the victim’s father asked the accused cop to marry her daughter, he refused and suggested opting for abortion. Dakshina Kannada Police has taken the accused in custody and started an investigation. “Accused police constable is in custody. The investigation is going on,” said Sonawane Rishikesh Bhagwan, Superintendent of Police, Dakshina Kannada. Bengaluru extends COVID restrictions, night curfew till Oct 11

Bengaluru: COVID-19-induced restrictions including night curfew (10 pm to 5 am) till October 11 have been extended in Bengaluru, as per an official order. Night curfew will continue to be imposed with revised timing from 10 pm to 5 am in the State as per the existing guidelines with effect from September 25, 2021. Karnataka reported 504 fresh COVID-19 cases and 20 deaths on Sunday, as per the health bulletin released by the state government. The state has logged a total of 29,73,899 cases till date with 12,804 active cases.  With 893 fresh recoveries, the cumulative number of recoveries in Karnataka has gone up to 29,23,320 while the death toll mounted to 37,746. The positivity rate in Karnataka recorded on Sunday was recorded at 0.48 per cent. 2 Iranians among 4 held in Bengaluru for drug peddling

Bengaluru: Central Crime Branch (CCB) on has arrested four persons including two Iran nationals for allegedly peddling drugs in Bengaluru, police said. Sandeep Patil, Joint Commissioner of Police, Crime, Bengaluru City Police said that arrested Iranians were overstaying on student visas.  “CCB arrest 4 drug peddlers including 2 Iranians, overstaying on student visa procured hybrid cannabis seeds through the darknet and grown at home using Ultraviolet lights. Case booked under Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act (NDPS) and Foreigners Act,” said Sandeep Patil in a tweet. The police have seized marijuana worth Rs 1 crore, 130 marijuana plants, LSD blotting papers and a car. The two Iran nationals were staying illegally in an apartment near Bidadi. Karnataka HC notice to centre on treatment of 17-month-old baby

Bengaluru : The Karnataka High Court has issued a notice to the Centre in connection with the medical treatment of a 17-month-old baby suffering from rare Spinal Muscular atrophy (Type 1) disease. The petition in this regard was submitted by the baby’s father Naveen. The bench headed by Justice Krishna S. Dixit heard the matter on Monday. The petitioner’s counsel submitted that the baby suffered from an inherited disease. The treatment is not available in India and the vaccine has to be imported from the US, he said. It was also submitted that the cost for the treatment is Rs 16 crore and till now Rs 8 crore has been collected through crowdfunding. The baby should be treated before 24 months from birth otherwise it can be fatal. The petitioner requested to give directions to the government to provide a deficit amount for the treatment. The counsel for the Centre explained that there is a separate policy for the treatment of rarest of rare diseases and medical experts have to take

Karnataka governor Thaawarchand Gehlot on Saturday administered oath to 10 judges of the Karnataka High Court. The new appointees are Justice Maralur Indrakumar Arun, Justice Engalaguppe Seetharamaiah Indiresh, Justice Ravi Venkappa Hosmani, Justice Savanur Vishwajith Shetty, Justice Shivashankar Amarannavar, Justice Makkimane Ganeshaiah Uma, Justice Vedavyasachar Srishananda, Justice Hanchate Sanjeevkumar, Justice Padmaraj Nemachandra Desai, and Justice Panjigadde Krishna Bhat. A notification on their elevation from additional judges to judges was issued by the Ministry of Law and Justice, Government of India on September 23. Bengaluru : Karnataka Police have arrested a foreign national and seized drugs worth Rs 2.5 crore being smuggled in champagne bottles, sources said on Saturday. The contraband also included 2,500 grams of MDMA crystal powder. The drugs were sold to students, industrialists in the reputed hotels. The investigations are on to ascertain the source of the drugs. The accused was caught while he was selling the drugs near Yusuf Maszid service road in HBR Layout, according to police. Each Champagne bottle carrying drugs was sold for Rs 60 to Rs 70 lakh. The middleman used to pack it in small packets and sold it to the customers. Govindapura police are following leads to nab the others involved in the racket. The accused has been identified as Dosu Khaleef, 28, a citizen of the Ivory Coast. A mobile and a two-wheeler was also seized from Khaleef. Khaleef come to India three years ago under a tourist visa. The order by the state government instructed the cinema halls, auditoriums to operate with 100 per cent capacity from October 1 while adhering to COVID norms. The guidelines mandate a minimum of one dose of vaccine along with other social distancing norms.Pubs have also been permitted to operate from October 3. A total of 789 new cases of COVID-19, 23 deaths and 1,050 recoveries were reported in Karnataka in the last 24 hours, said the state’s health department on Friday. Bengaluru:  An explosion rocked a locality in Bengaluru on Thursday afternoon killing at least three people and leaving four others injured, a police official said. “The blast took place in a transport godown next to a puncture shop. Three people were killed including two in the puncture shop while four were injured,” the Bengaluru South Deputy Commissioner of Police Harish Pandey told reporters here. He also said the victims of the blast in Tharagupet locality have been identified. The official also clarified that the explosion took place due to some ‘unstable chemical’, which was an industrial consignment. Bengaluru : As many as 34 security personnel of the Border Security Force (BSF) who came from Shillong in Meghalaya have tested positive for COVID-19 at the Yelahanka BSF camp here in Karnataka, sources in the health department said on Wednesday. The authorities have quarantined 90 soldiers, who came in contact with them as a precautionary measure. More than a 1,000 soldiers have arrived in Bengaluru for training from various states across the country. As COVID infection has been found among the troopers, the training has been cancelled, sources said. The health department is also conducting COVID tests on all soldiers in the camp on Wednesday to ascertain the exact situation and the number of infections to initiate precautionary measures. Sources explained that a 150-troopers-contingent had come to Bengaluru camp for training from Shillong on September 15. Bengaluru: Central Crime Branch (CCB) of Bengaluru has arrested a person for allegedly leaking sensitive information to foreign agencies. As per information shared by the Joint Commissioner of Police Sandeep Patil on Monday, the accused, a resident of Rajasthan, took photos of visa installations and defence establishments and shared them with the foreign agencies.  A case has been registered under the Official Secrets Act and relevant sections of IPC.
