Image
Udupi: Karnataka Hindu Religious Organisations and Endowments minister, Kota Srinivasa Poojary on Wednesday dropped hint that he was in discussions with state COVID task force and other departments to reopen temples in a phased manner after July 5.  Poojary told reporters that the government is likely to give permission to reopen ‘A’ grade temples across the state in the first phase of reopening of temples. Among the government’s notified 34,558 temples, there are only a select few which fall in ‘A’ grade category which attract huge devotees.  The minister added that the state government is contemplating pros and cons of reopening of temples as due to prolonged lockdown, it might just throw open floodgates to devotees and the state government is also worried about the fact that temples shouldn’t be the super spreaders of this deadly virus. Poojary conceded that there has been a lot of pressure from a cross section of people to reopen temples as several claim that they need to car

COVID curbs on travellers from Maharashtra to Karnataka

Image
Bengaluru: The Karnataka government has made a negative RT-PCR report mandatory for travellers from Maharashtra to the southern state to contain the pandemic, said an order on Tuesday. “Travellers entering Karnataka from Maharashtra by air, train or road must carry a negative RT-PCR test report not older than 72 hours or vaccination certificate of at least one dose of anti-COVID vaccine from Wednesday,” said the order of the state government here. As part of special surveillance measures to contain the virus, passengers from Maharashtra should produce the COVID test report or vaccine certificate before boarding trains to Karnataka, said the South-Western Railway in a statement. The order applies also to fliers and commuters travelling in buses, taxis or personal cars to Karnataka from Maharashtra, the worst-affected state by the pandemic since mid-March 2020. “Airlines should issue boarding passes to only fliers carrying the negative COVID test or vaccination certificate for all

Cold war in Karnataka Congress over next CM’s choice

Image
Bengaluru: A cold war is on within the Congress Party in Karnataka over the probable choice for the chief ministership if the party comes to power two years from now. Though it is in the nature of ‘counting the chicken before the eggs are hatched’, the two top leaders, former CM Siddramaiah and KPCC chief D. K. Shivakumar (DKS) have left no one in doubt that they are in the fray for the top post if the party was voted into power in April 2023. At least two party colleagues of Siddramaiah have aired their opinion in the open. Though both leaders have denied that they were laying claim to the top post in the event of the party’s win, it is believed that the campaign is being orchestrated from behind the scene. DKS is the strongman of the party in the State and has a firm grip over the organization while Siddramaiah is considered the tallest leader, the only one to have completed the five-year tenure in the CM’s office during the last forty years. He is also considered close to Rahul

Karnataka growers dump mangoes as demand slumps, prices crash

Image
Bengaluru:  Hundreds of distressed mango growers in Karnataka’s Kolar district have been dumping mangos on roads near Srinivasapura over a week due to steep fall in demand and crash in their prices, traders said on Sunday. “As demand for some variety of mangoes like Thothapuri and Banganapalli fell drastically due to thee extended lockdown affecting their sales and consumption, the growers have been forced to dump their unsold stocks, as the fruit was ripening faster in summer heat,” grower-cum-trader G.B. Suraj told IANS on phone from Kolar, about 100 km east of Bengaluru. Though the production was higher due to timely rains and favourable climate leading to a record harvest, he said the demand was about 50 per cent less than last year, as many traders from across the state, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu kept away from buying the king of fruit in bulk quantity, as they were ripening fast and becoming perishable. “Unlike in the past, mango juice makers and pulp-processing units hav
