Image
Bengaluru: Karnataka Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa on Saturday said that the decision on whether to extend the lockdown in the state or not would be taken on June 5, two days prior to the current lockdown’s end.  “No decision has been taken yet in terms of extending the lockdown in the state in view of the improving COVID recovery rate,” the CM said after holding a meeting with the Ministers and bureaucrats here. Yediyurappa said that there are demands from various quarters to extend the lockdown but as of now his government is in no hurry to think on lines of extending the lockdown, the decision on which, however, can be taken on June 5, two days prior to the current lockdown’s end. He recalled that the lockdown-like restrictions were imposed for two weeks on public movement on April 27.  While it was supposed to end on May 10, experts had insisted to impose lockdown from May 10 to 24, which was later extended till June 7.  The CM said that in view of public health and the su

Image
Bengaluru : Hit hard by Covid second wave, Karnataka is introducing a sewage surveillance system across 45 wards of the 198 wards on pilot basis to track the deadly mutant virus at an early stage, even among asymptomatic individuals. Additional Chief Secretary, Urban Development and BBMP administrator, Rakesh Singh said that the system will cover over 75 per cent of City’s Nine million population by generating over 90 data points per week signalling the emerging COVID-19 clusters or signalling a COVID-19 cluster’s exit from an area. “We are happy to be the first in India to launch this platform,” he tweeted. This pilot study is said to be the first in its kind across the country. Karnataka Congress seeks arrest of tainted BJP MLA

Image
Bengaluru : Karnataka Congress on Thursday sought the arrest of ruling BJP’s tainted MLA Ramesh Jarkiholi, who resigned as minister in early March after a purported sleaze video of him with a woman came to light. “We urge state Home Minister Basavaraj Bommai to arrest Jarkiholi, as he was caught in the sleaze video with a woman, who accused him of raping her on the pretext of getting her a government job,” state Congress President D.K. Shivakumar told reporters here. Jarkiholi resigned on March 3 as state Water Resources Minister, a day after the sleaze video went viral on social media. It was also aired on local news channels on March 2. Jarkiholi got re-elected from the Gokak Assembly seat in Belagavi district after he defected from the Congress and joined the BJP in November 2019. He became a cabinet minister in February 2020. Outraged by the state government’s alleged indifference to the victim’s plight, Shivakumar said it is a matter of shame that Jarkiholi is allowed to roam

Bengaluru police open fire on 2 rape accused

Image
Bengaluru : The Bengaluru police on Friday said that they had to resort to gun power in bringing down at least two of the four accused in the brutal rape of a woman who was alleged to have been trafficked from Bangladesh. Within hours of Assam police posting the viral video showing the woman being sexually tortured and assaulted by the men, the Bengaluru police on Thursday nabbed all four persons, city police revealed hours after their success. All four were taken to Karegowda Layout, K. Channasandra, where they stayed in a rented house. Early Friday, two of them, Ridoy Babu, 25, and Sagar, 23, attacked the policemen and tried to flee. The police opened fire in self-defence. “Both were shot at their knees before they were nabbed and are now being treated at a government hospital,” the police said. The Bengaluru police continues to track the victim, said to be a 22-year-old woman from Bangladesh, who is believed to be in a neighbouring state, and a part of a prostitution ring run
